Fishing season doesn’t have to end when the lakes freeze over. For some, this is the best time of year to fish. Imagine, it’s just you, the shanty, the winter sun, and time. When days are hectic and technology reigns, sometimes it’s necessary to get away from it all. For ice fishermen, the solitude and quiet that comes with the sport are what life is all about.

Every February, hundreds of ice fishermen from around the state descend upon Leadville for the annual Twin Lakes Fishing Derby hosted by the Leadville Rod and Gun Club. With cash and prizes at stake, it’s become quite the exciting event!

Grab your auger and head to Crystal Lakes for the ultimate day of mid-alpine ice fishing. Avoid the crowds found on Leadville’s larger lakes by heading six miles south of Leadville on Highway 24 and looking for signs on your right.

Crystal Lakes border the Reddy State Wildlife Area on the Arkansas River. The lakes are stocked with rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout and are an excellent area to seek the solitude so many ice fishermen crave.
