Because it’s centrally located and has trailheads in 11 counties, Colorado’s San Isabel National Forest is one of the state’s most accessible forests. Lake County’s Leadville Ranger District is right in the middle of The San Isabel National Forest and a great resource for trails, camping, and other important information regarding the wilderness areas in and around Leadville.
Near Leadville, visitors can visit the Holy Cross Wilderness Area, known for its numerous pools, streams, and lakes, the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area, home to over eight fourteeners, and the Mt. Massive Wilderness Area, where the truly adventurous can climb Colorado’s two highest mountains—Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive.
